Inconel Alloy 625®: Information, Composition & Properties for Studbolts
Inconel Alloy 625® (UNS N06625) is a high-performance nickel-chromium-molybdenum superalloy engineered for exceptional strength and superior corrosion resistance across a broad temperature spectrum, from cryogenic levels up to 1000°C (1832°F). Unlike many other alloys, Inconel 625® derives its high tensile and yield strength from the solid-solution strengthening effect of molybdenum and niobium within its nickel-chromium matrix, eliminating the need for complex precipitation-hardening heat treatments. This unique metallurgical structure makes it an ideal material for studbolts used in critical assemblies that must maintain structural integrity under extreme pressure and temperature cycles.
Composition:
The chemical composition of Inconel 625® is primarily defined by a high nickel content (minimum 58%), which provides excellent resistance to chloride-ion stress corrosion cracking. Significant additions of chromium (20-23%) ensure protection against oxidizing environments, while molybdenum (8-10%) and niobium/tantalum (3.15-4.15%) work together to stiffen the alloy’s matrix, providing high mechanical strength and exceptional resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion. Minor elements such as iron (maximum 5%), manganese, and silicon are also precisely controlled to maintain the alloy’s renowned weldability and fabricability.
Properties:
- Outstanding Corrosion Resistance: Inconel 625® provides superior defense against a wide range of corrosive media, including seawater, brackish water, and aggressive mineral acids like hydrochloric and nitric acid.
- High-Temperature Stability: It maintains high fatigue and creep-rupture strength at elevated temperatures, resisting oxidation and carburization where standard stainless steels would fail.
- Excellent Mechanical Performance: With a typical tensile strength of approximately 930 MPa and yield strength of 517 MPa, these studbolts offer a high strength-to-weight ratio for safety-critical applications.
- Versatility in Extreme Conditions: The alloy is non-magnetic and exhibits excellent toughness and ductility even in cryogenic environments, making it a versatile choice for aerospace, marine, and nuclear engineering.
Why Inconel Alloy 625® is ideal for Studbolts:
The combination of exceptional mechanical strength and nearly universal corrosion resistance makes Inconel 625® an essential choice for studbolts in high-integrity fastening applications. These components are particularly vital in offshore oil and gas drilling, chemical processing plants, and marine propulsion systems where exposure to highly acidic or chloride-rich environments is common. By using Inconel 625® studbolts, industries can ensure long-term reliability and minimize the risk of fastener failure in environments characterized by massive stress, high pressure, and severe corrosive attack.
At West Special Fasteners, we take pride in every Inconel Alloy 625® Studbolt we produce, no matter the application.

Inconel Alloy 625® Studbolt Manufacturing Capabilities
Our Sheffield-based manufacturing facility specialises in the production of high-integrity Inconel Alloy 625® studbolts, utilising advanced hot forging and precision machining techniques to meet the rigorous demands of the aerospace, marine, and chemical processing industries. As one of the few UK manufacturers with dedicated hot press forging capabilities, we ensure the material integrity of every studbolt is preserved for high-stress applications. Our hybrid workshop combines CNC technology with traditional craftsmanship, allowing us to produce studbolts in a comprehensive size range from M3 to M100 (metric) and 3/16″ to 4″ (imperial), with bespoke lengths up to 500mm.
To ensure superior performance in safety-critical and high-temperature environments, we utilise cold-form thread rolling for diameters up to M72, which significantly enhances tensile strength and fatigue resistance compared to cut threads. Every production run is supported by exhaustive quality assurance, including API-approved heat treatment, in-house PMI testing via XRF technology, and full NDT certification to guarantee total material traceability. From specialised anti-corrosion coatings like PTFE and Xylan to precision dot marking for identification, our manufacturing capabilities are engineered to deliver reliable fastening solutions for non-negotiable environments involving extreme pressure and corrosion.
