Achieving ISO 14001 certification is an important milestone for West Special Fasteners and reflects our ongoing commitment to environmental responsibility.
As a manufacturer supplying critical fastening solutions to industries including defence, energy, nuclear, renewables and subsea, we understand that our responsibilities extend beyond the products we produce. How we use resources, manage waste and operate as a business all have an environmental impact, and it’s important that we continue looking for ways to do things better.
ISO 14001 has helped us bring these efforts together into a clear, structured environmental management system and provides independent verification that we’re managing our environmental responsibilities effectively
Taking a Closer Look at How We Operate
One of the most valuable parts of the certification process was the opportunity to step back and examine our operations in detail.
We reviewed how different activities across the business affect the environment, assessed existing controls and identified opportunities to improve efficiency and reduce unnecessary impact.
Much of this work built on practices already in place, but the process challenged us to look more closely at where improvements could be made and ensure environmental considerations are factored into everyday decision-making.
The Value of Continuous Small Changes
When people think about environmental improvement, they often picture large-scale projects. In reality, meaningful progress often comes from smaller changes made consistently over time.
Whether that’s reducing waste, making more efficient use of materials, improving energy usage or reviewing processes to remove unnecessary consumption, these actions can collectively make a significant difference.
The certification process encouraged us to identify opportunities across the business and put measures in place to track progress, helping ensure improvements are practical, measurable and sustainable.
Making Environmental responsibility Part of Everyday Business
Achieving ISO 14001 wasn’t the work of one department. Colleagues from across the business contributed their knowledge and experience, helping us understand environmental impacts within their areas and identify practical opportunities for improvement.
The project was led by Nichol Thompson, whose hard work and attention to detail played a key role in guiding the business through the certification process. Working with colleagues across the company, Nichol helped bring everything together to ensure our environmental management system reflects how we operate day to day.
The wider involvement of employees across the business also helped reinforce the idea that environmental responsibility is something everyone contributes to, regardless of their role. By bringing different perspectives together, we’ve created a stronger foundation for future improvements and a better understanding of how day-to-day actions can have a positive impact.
Why ISO 14001 Matters
ISO 14001 provides independent confirmation that our environmental management system meets a recognised international standard.
For our customers, it offers confidence that environmental considerations are being managed responsibly and consistently. For our employees, it provides clear guidance and accountability while supporting a culture where environmental performance remains part of everyday operations.
Most importantly, it helps ensure environmental responsibility remains an ongoing focus as the business continues to grow and evolve.
Looking Ahead
Achieving certification is a significant achievement, but it is only one step in an ongoing journey.
ISO 14001 provides a strong foundation for the future, helping us build on the progress already made while continuing to identify new opportunities to improve the way we operate.
We’re proud of what has been achieved so far and grateful to everyone across the business who played a part in reaching this milestone.
