Steel meets History at the BSSA Conference

June 18, 2025

This event, hosted by the British Stainless Steel Association, brings together the stainless steel community to connect, learn, and grow. The BSSA supports the industry with expert advice, training, and market insights, therefore helping members stay ahead and promote best practices in stainless steel use.

We were delighted to be invited to speak. Our Business Development Manager, Simon Grass-Smith, took to the stage to share insights into one of the most exciting projects we’ve ever been part of. Where Steel meets history – The restoration of HMS Victory.

Simon spoke about the meaningful work West Special Fasteners is doing as part of this historic undertaking. Highlighting the challenges and triumphs of supplying bespoke fasteners for one of the most iconic ships in British naval history.

A Historic Honour: HMS Victory Restoration

HMS Victory, best known as Vice Admiral Lord Nelson’s flagship at the Battle of Trafalgar, is undergoing a decade-long restoration to ensure her legacy lives on. Early assessments revealed the ship was in far worse condition than expected. Some timbers had deteriorated to the point of crumbling. Now protected under cover and drier than she’s been in decades, the restoration is progressing just in time to prevent further damage.

Our Role in the Restoration

This project demands non-standard, highly specialised fasteners because of the ship’s unique 18th-century construction methods. Our team is working closely with designers and shipwrights to deliver custom solutions on demand, adapting to the evolving needs of the restoration.

With our long standing reputation for precision, innovation, and reliability, we’re thrilled to contribute to preserving this national treasure. Once complete, HMS Victory will continue to inspire and educate for generations to come, and we’ll be honoured to say we played a part in her story.

Simon Grass-Smith shared his thoughts on the day:

“I was thrilled to be invited to speak at this year’s event. It gave me the chance to share a project I’m passionate about and hopefully that came through in my presentation! This one felt especially meaningful. I have a close family connection to the Royal Navy, so working on HMS Victory carries a personal significance for me. As always, the event was fantastic. Insightful speakers from across the industry exchanging ideas and exploring ways to collaborate. And of course, the traditional evening reception didn’t disappoint, especially with a brilliant close-up magician. It’s a highlight of the calendar that everyone looks forward to. This project is not only a testament to our technical capabilities but also a proud moment in our company’s history”
