Achieving ISO 45001 marks an important milestone for West Special Fasteners and recognises the work we continue to put into health and safety across the business.
As a manufacturer supplying critical fastening solutions to industries including energy, defence, nuclear, renewables and subsea, maintaining a safe working environment has always been a fundamental part of how we operate. ISO 45001 recognises that commitment and provides a framework for managing health & safety consistently and proactively.
Building on Strong Foundations
Health and safety has never been something we view as a box-ticking exercise. Safe working practices, risk management and employee wellbeing are already embedded throughout the business, but achieving ISO 45001 challenged us to take an even closer look at everything we do.
The certification process involved reviewing procedures, assessing risks, updating documentation and ensuring our systems met the requirements of an internationally recognised standard. It also provided an opportunity to strengthen existing processes and improve consistency across the business.
Rather than introducing an entirely new way of working, ISO 45001 has helped us formalise and build upon the good practices already in place.
A Team Effort
One of the most valuable aspects of the ISO 45001 process was the involvement of employees throughout the business.
Creating a safe workplace is not the responsibility of one department or one individual. The people using equipment, following procedures and carrying out tasks every day are often best placed to identify opportunities to make processes safer and more effective. Their knowledge, feedback and engagement played an important role in helping us achieve certification.
This achievement also reflects the significant effort invested by our Health & Safety Manager Nichol, who led the project and worked closely with colleagues across the business to ensure we met the standard’s requirements. Achieving certification required commitment from the entire team, and the result is something everyone can be proud of.
Why It Matters
For our employees, ISO 45001 provides confidence that clear systems are in place to identify, manage and reduce workplace risks.
For our customers, it provides independent verification that our health and safety management system has been assessed against a recognised international standard. Many of the sectors we support expect rigorous standards from their supply chain partners, and certification provides additional assurance that we operate responsibly and professionally.
Most importantly, it helps ensure that health and safety remains at the forefront of day-to-day operations, supporting our goal of providing a workplace where people feel safe, supported and able to perform at their best.
Part of a Bigger Picture
ISO 45001 is the latest in a series of achievements across the business.
In 2026, we were also honoured to receive a King’s Award for Enterprise in Innovation, one of the UK’s highest recognitions for business. The award celebrates our drive for innovation and manufacturing excellence and reflects the dedication, expertise and hard work of our team.
Achieving certification is never the end point. We are already working towards further certifications and accreditations that will strengthen our management systems, support customer requirements and help us continue developing as a business. These standards provide valuable opportunities to review our processes, challenge ourselves and ensure we continue meeting the expectations of our customers and stakeholders.
Looking Forward
Achieving ISO 45001 is worth celebrating, but maintaining those standards every day is what matters most.
As West Special Fasteners continues to grow, we remain committed ensuring that health and safety remains a fundamental part of how we operarate, supporting our people and continually looking for ways to enhance the way we work. This certification recognises the hard work of colleagues across the business and provides a strong foundation for the future.
