Last week, we had the pleasure of attending the East Midlands Chambers Enterprising Women Awards Finalist Announcement at Casa Hotel in Chesterfield, conveniently just down the road from us. As always, it was a fantastic event that brought together women from across the East Midlands, each with their own story, achievements and passion for what they do.
The Enterprising Women Awards have long been a highlight in the regional business calendar, celebrating the talent, determination, and success of women across a wide range of sectors. The finalist announcement was a great reminder of why these awards are so well respected. The room was full of inspiring women making a real impact across businesses in our region.
Inspiration, Laughter and a Warm Welcome
The event was expertly hosted, as always, by the brilliant Enterprising Women Co-Chairs Eileen Perry MBE DL and Jean Mountain, who have a real knack for making everyone feel welcome while keeping the energy high throughout. Their warmth, encouragement and sense of humour are a big part of why these events are always such a pleasure to attend. Jean had the room laughing more than once and if you ask us, they were absolutely robbed when it came to the Strictly gig!
Beyond the awards themselves, it’s always a great chance to catch up with familiar faces, meet new people and celebrate each other’s successes. You leave feeling energised by the passion and ambition of so many women across the East Midlands business community
Learning from a Lifetime Achievement Winner
One of the highlights of the afternoon was hearing from Sandra Wiggins, last year’s Lifetime Achievement Award winner. During award ceremonies, it can sometimes be difficult to fully appreciate the remarkable journeys of the winners, with so much happening throughout the evening. Having the opportunity to hear Sandra speak in more detail about her experiences was both insightful and inspiring.
After hearing her speak, it was easy to see why she received the award. Her story was one of determination, resilience and perseverance, but perhaps the most powerful message she shared was the importance of believing in yourself.
It sounds like simple advice, but it’s something many of us need reminding of. It’s easy to underestimate ourselves or doubt what we’re capable of. Sandra’s words served as an important reminder that self-belief can be the foundation for achieving things we never thought possible.
Celebrating Our Own Success
Of course, one of the biggest reasons for our excitement at this year’s finalist announcement was the news that our very own Nichol Thompson has been named a finalist in the Employee of the Year category.
We’re incredibly proud to see her hard work acknowledged. Nichol was unfortunately unable to attend the event as she was busy supporting a critical operational project back at work, demonstrating the very commitment and dedication that have helped earn her this nomination in the first place.
While she wasn’t there to hear the announcement in person, she was absolutely thrilled to learn that she had reached the finals. Everyone at West Special Fasteners is delighted for Nichol. It’s fantastic to see her dedication recognised.
Looking Ahead to September
Now the finalists now announced, our attention turns to the awards ceremony in September. We are looking forward to joining fellow finalists and celebrating the achievements of so many outstanding women once again.
One of the phrases often shared at Enterprising Women events is that this isn’t about the decline of men; it’s about the rise of women – creating more opportunities for women to thrive and succeed. Looking around the room you couldn’t help but feel optimistic about the future. The level of talent and leadership on display was genuinely impressive.
If the women we met at Casa Hotel are any indication, the future of business in the East Midlands is in exceptionally capable hands. Their success is inspiring the next generation to aim higher and believe that those opportunities are within reach.
