Embracing Neurodiversity: A Strength, Not a Stereotype

July 2, 2025

At West Special Fasteners, we believe that innovation thrives when we embrace the full spectrum of human potential. One powerful way we do this is by recognising and supporting neurodiversity, the idea that neurological differences are natural variations of the human experience, not deficits to be corrected.

What Is Neurodiversity?

Put simply, neurodiversity acknowledges that every brain works differently, and that’s not just okay, it’s essential. From how we process information to how we interact with the world, these differences shape unique perspectives, talents, and ways of thinking that can drive progress in unexpected and powerful ways.

Neurodivergent Minds who Inspire

Throughout history, many remarkable individuals have demonstrated how neurodivergence can be a source of strength:

  • Albert Einstein.  Though never formally diagnosed, many experts believe Einstein showed signs of ADHD, dyslexia, and autism. His revolutionary thinking changed the world.
  • Simone Biles, The most decorated gymnast in history has ADHD, showing that neurodivergence can fuel focus, resilience, and excellence.
  • Richard Branson, Diagnosed with dyslexia and ADHD, calls his dyslexia a “brilliant way of thinking” and attributes much of his entrepreneurial success to the unique perspective it gives him.
  • Greta Thunberg, The globally recognised climate activist refers to her autism as her “superpower,” crediting her unique focus and perspective for her powerful message.
  • Bill Gates, Once considered “incapable of learning,” Gates, who has dyslexia, went on to found Microsoft and reshape the tech industry.

These individuals are just a few examples of how neurodivergent minds can enrich our world and workplaces with creativity, innovation, and determination.

More Than a Tick-Box Exercise

At Wests, we’re not just focused on improving our products, we’re committed to building a culture where everyone feels empowered to contribute, grow, and thrive

Neurodiversity isn’t about ticking boxes. It’s about valuing different ways of thinking and creating space for those differences to shine. Around 15–20% of the population is neurodivergent, and that diversity brings fresh ideas, problem-solving approaches, and perspectives that are vital in today’s fast-moving world.

Understanding the Neurodiversity Umbrella

A variety of neurological differences fall under the umbrella of neurodivergence, such as:

  • Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)
  • Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)
  • Dyslexia, Dyspraxia, Dyscalculia, Dysgraphia
  • Tourette Syndrome
  • Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD)
  • Sensory Processing Differences
  • Functional Neurological Disorder (FND)
  • Acquired Neurodivergence

Each of these affects how individuals experience the world, but none of them are inherently negative. In fact, they often come with strengths that can be transformative in the right environment.

Our Commitment

At West Special Fasteners, we’re committed to building a workplace where neurodivergent individuals are not only accepted but supported. We believe that embracing neurodiversity opens the door to greater creativity, stronger collaboration, and more meaningful success.

Let’s move beyond labels and limitations, and build a future where every mind has the opportunity to make its mark.
