BS970 is a Specification for wrought steels for mechanical and allied engineering purposes. General inspection and testing procedures and specific requirements for carbon, carbon manganese, alloy and stainless steels, several grades are covered including

• BS970 316S11 – Austenitic stainless steel with good resistance to chloride corrosion.
• BS970 304S11 – Austenitic stainless steel which is probably the most widely used. When annealed it is non magnetic. When cold worked it becomes slightly magnetic.
• BS970 431S29 – Martensitic with good impact strength and corrosion resistance which is quench-hardenable.
• BS970 321S31 – Austenitic stainless steel with added titanium.
