Volunteering time at a Chesterfield foodbank has become a regular part of my life, and it’s something I’m incredibly proud to do as part of the team at West Special Fasteners. It started as a one-off donation but it lead to much more. The more time I spent there, the more I realised how vital these spaces are, not just for the food they provide, but for the dignity, warmth, and connection they offer.
Each session, I help prepare parcels, make hot drinks and most importantly, speak with people who come through the doors. The foodbank is there for people in crisis, when life becomes overwhelming, when money runs out, or when circumstances change in an instant. It’s a place of kindness and hope, and it’s often the first step toward getting back on track.
And I’m only able to do this because of the incredible support from West Special Fasteners, who believe in giving back to our community.
The People Behind the Parcels
What stays with me most are the stories. Some are heartbreaking. You hear about job losses, family breakdowns, health struggles, and the sheer weight of trying to make ends meet. Every part of you wants to help, to fix things, to offer more than just a food parcel. And while the foodbank provides vital short-term relief, it’s not a long-term solution.
There’s a quiet strength in the people who come in. Many are doing everything they can to stay afloat, and asking for help is never easy. It’s humbling to witness their resilience, and it reminds me how quickly life can change for any of us. No one is immune to hardship, and no one should face it alone.
Sharing Support That Goes Beyond Food
That’s thanks to the fantastic work done by Chesterfield foodbank there are ways to share information about the incredible support services available. The foodbank is often just the beginning, it can also help connect people to:
- Counselling services for those dealing with trauma, anxiety, or depression
- Debt advice to manage financial pressures and avoid spiralling into crisis
- Addiction support for individuals and families affected by substance misuse
- Housing and tenancy guidance for those at risk of homelessness
- Citizens Advice for legal, employment, and benefits support
- Community pantries for more sustainable access to affordable food
- Local support groups for parents, carers, and those facing isolation
- And sometimes, just someone to listen, because being heard can be the first step toward healing
These services are the bridge to stability. They offer long-term help, practical solutions, and emotional support. I’ve seen people walk in feeling hopeless and leave with a sense of direction, simply because someone took the time to listen and guide them toward the right help.
The Emotional Impact of Volunteering
Volunteering at the foodbank is one of the most meaningful things I do, but it’s not always easy. Some days are emotionally heavy. You hear stories that stay with you: stories of loss, fear, uncertainty, and resilience. It’s impossible not to be affected. These moments remind you just how fragile life can be, and how quickly circumstances can change for anyone.
But alongside the challenges come deeply rewarding experiences. You begin to notice and appreciate the small victories, a smile of relief, a heartfelt thank-you, or someone sharing good news about starting a new job or moving into a new home. Those moments are powerful. They’re reminders that hope is never far away, and that even a few hours of your time can help someone take a step forward.
It’s also made me more grateful. Grateful for the support systems we have in place, for the organisations working tirelessly behind the scenes, and for the volunteers who show up week after week, quietly making the world a better place. These are the unsung heroes, the people who pack parcels, offer kind words, and create a space where dignity and compassion come first. They give their time freely, often while juggling work, family, and other responsibilities, simply because they care.
Their selflessness is inspiring. They don’t do it for recognition or reward. They do it because they believe in helping others. And in a world that can sometimes feel overwhelming, their dedication is a powerful reminder of the good that exists all around us.
Why Businesses Must Do More Than Donate
I feel lucky because West Special Fasteners understand that giving back looks different for everyone. Right now, they support me to volunteer regularly at the local foodbank. They make sure I have the time and flexibility to be there, because they know that even one person showing up can make a real difference. It’s not about numbers, or money, its about impact. Showing up, being present and making a difference. Its about recognising that we all have a role to play in building stronger, more compassionate communities.
If you’re a business leader reading this, I urge you: support your team in giving back. Encourage volunteering. Build partnerships with local charities. Make time for causes that matter. Because when we all contribute, time, energy, and compassion, our communities grow stronger.
