Held every year on 1st August, Yorkshire Day is more than just a date on the calendar. It’s a celebration of everything that makes England’s largest county unique. Officially recognised since 1985, when the first civic celebration was held in York by the Yorkshire Society, the day brings communities together to honour Yorkshire’s culture, history, and identity. In 2025, this year’s festivities are heading to Bradford and Ilkley where locals and visitors alike will come together to mark the occasion in true Yorkshire style.
Sheffield’s Steel Legacy
No Yorkshire day celebration would be complete without a nod to Sheffield’s legendary steel industry. Surrounded by hills rich in coal, iron ore, and millstone grit and powered by the energy of five rivers, Sheffield offered the perfect conditions for industrial innovation. In the 1740s, Benjamin Huntsman’s crucible steel process transformed steelmaking and forged Sheffield’s legacy as a hub for precision engineering. By the 19th century, Sheffield was producing the majority of the worlds crucible steel. And in 1913, Harry Brearley’s invention of ‘rustless’ steel bolted Sheffield’s industrial reputation firmly in place. We now call this Stainless steel a material that remains at the heart of what we do here at West Special Fasteners.
